How does it work?

Drawnalism was established in 2009, so we have a lot of experience and expertise to offer our clients. If you are a senior executive looking to commission one of our services, if you are a team member tasked with working with us, or if you are an agent looking to extend your content offer or impress a client, we will talk you through every step of our booking processes and requirements.

We will also work with you to make sure you get the right mix of before, during and after services to enable us to do what we do best: which is to use drawing to tell memorable stories about the events and projects our clients run and to make sure the people who participate in them can share those stories as easily as possible. Meanwhile, here are some of the questions we are asked most frequently:

Drawnalism and its services

What is Drawnalism?

Drawnalism is a well-established business, created by Alex Hughes and Matthew Buck in 2009. Its In the Moment, On the Air, and At the Studio services offer live in-person, live from-distance, and traditional line-art, graphic and video services for events and communication projects for clients of all kinds. Find out more.

What is In the Moment?

In the Moment is the first service that Drawnalism developed and the one that clients and agencies know us for best. Drawnalists work live and in person to create a paper or digital graphic record of conferences, meetings and other events. This encourages learning and sharing and creates valuable collateral for follow-up communications. Find out more.

What is On the Air?

On the Air is the service that Drawnalism has developed to respond to the evolving world of digital engagement, conference calls, webinars and podcasts. Drawnalists work live via video or audio streaming, or as live using digital recordings, to capture content and audience response to it. The resulting graphic recording delivers all the benefits of our In the Moment service to the digital world. Find out more.

What is At the Studio?

At the Studio is Drawnalism’s comprehensive portfolio of branding, illustration, graphic art and video services. These can be commissioned as part of before, during and after packages to support our In the Moment and On the Air offers or booked in their own right. We also offer Animated Drawnalism At the Studio for social or corporate video. Find out more.

What other services do you offer

Drawnalism can call on expert content creators to craft words for our At the Studio portfolio and we frequently work with experienced livebloggers at events that are being captured In the Moment. Find out more.

We also work with professional videographers to create high production value videos using Animated Drawnalism. Find out more.

Availability, cost and booking

How much notice do you need?

Drawnalism gets busy! If you want us to draw In the Moment at a major event that requires multiple Drawnalists, or you want to secure our attendance at a series of events, or you want to book our services for an extended project with live and studio elements, we recommend three months’ notice.

If you are organising a one-day or two-day event that can be covered In the Moment by one or two Drawnalists, then we will need six weeks to one month’s notice. If you have a short notice inquiry, then do contact us, because we will always try to accommodate requests.

However, very short-notice bookings, made less than two-working weeks out from an event, will attract an additional charge. This is because of the costs that we will incur in re-organising diaries and booking travel and accommodation at the last minute.

What do you cost?

Drawnalism works with event and project organisers and commissioners to make sure they have the right package of services in place to deliver an excellent before, during and after experience for leaders and participants. This means our total price and costs vary from event to event and project to project.

Our most cost effective services are On the Air and At the Studio because they are delivered from distance. As an indicative starting point, in the UK one Drawnalist working on a project for one day will cost £700 per day plus VAT. We cost all of our commissions by time.

For our premium In the Moment at event attendance in the UK one Drawnalist for one day will cost £1,000 plus VAT and cost of materials and travel. Typically, we advise booking is made more than two-working weeks before the event (see above).

Working outside the UK our prices are comparable to the above. When drawing in the EU we operate as Drawnalism Europe Ltd and once again, as we travel for In the Moment we ask costs for time and carriage of our drawing materials.

Contact us to find out more.

How do I book?

Whether you want to use our In the Moment, On the Air or At the Studio service, or a package of before, during and after studio and live services to support an event, the process is the same. We will discuss your requirements in detail, draw up a proposal, refine it with you, and then exchange contracts. After that, we’re good to go. Read more about our three services and access the bespoke booking forms for each one here.

What to expect and how to prepare

In the Moment: you’ve been booked, what do you need?

If our Drawnalists are using our preferred model of working on large sheets of sticky paper, they will organise their own pads, easels and drawing materials. They will need somewhere to work, and to display their work. Find out more.

In the Moment: you’ve been booked, what happens on the day?

Our Drawnalists will arrive well before the start of the event, so they can liaise with the organiser or their commissioner and be ready for the first session.

They will capture all the sessions agreed with the organiser, liaise with a liveblogger if they are working with one, and display their work so attendees can interact with it. At the end of the day, they will photograph the sheets and create a pack of originals to present to the organiser. Find out more.

On the Air: you’ve been booked, what now?

If we have been booked to work live at a webinar, conference call or other digital event, we will organise a briefing call with the Drawnalist doing the work and run a technical check. We will then record the event graphically, hold a review meeting, and complete and colour the work promptly. Find out more.

At the Studio: how do you work and what can I expect?

Drawnalism offers a wide range of studio services, including illustrations, graphic art and Animated Drawnalism, that can be used to support In the Moment and On the Air bookings or commissioned separately.

In all cases, we will hold a kick-off meeting, call or email exchange that will lead to a process of idea generation. There will be a review and choice point, at which one or more concepts or ideas can be chosen from our drafts. We will then develop these for final sign-off, and then complete the work. Find out more.
